BEAUTIFUL SHARKS
Something For Kate

Murmur
SOMETHING For Kate manages to do something very few bands ever achieve. The locally-based trio is a solid rock band, to be sure, but it rarely resorts to the techniques so beloved of '90s rock bands - the jump from muted verse to anthemic chorus, the all-stops-out rocker to show off their chops, Beautiful Sharks is essentially a collection of intricately-arranged, ruminative ballads and mid-tempo rock songs, drawn taut by the tension that lies at the heart of the band's sound. The shuffling title track is something of a sonic high-wire act, with Paul Dempsey's gently-delivered guitar lines straining against the rhythms set up by bassist Stephanie Ashworth and drummer Clint Hyndman. And throughout, there is Dempsey's voice - a rasping, tortured thing that is Something For Kate's most distinctive instrument. The difficult second album is now out of the way; Dempsey & Co have handled it with aplomb.
