Something for Kate 8 Minutes On
The Buzz, July 1998
By Martin Pegan

After the success of Elsewhere for 8 Minutes and its lead single Captain, and the semi-success of the other singles from the album, Prick and Working Against Me, Something for Kate (or whoever is standing behind them holding the whip) have decided to milk the album one last time with another single, Roll Credit. Of the four singles, this is probably the least likely to make an impact on the album's sales figures, despite it showing a more mellow side of Elsewhere for 8 Minutes. Something for Kate drummer, Clint Hyndman hinted that he felt the same way, "Hopefully Roll Credit is the last single off Elsewhere for 8 Minutes. It would have to be. It's one last shot at trying to get the album in the top 10. It comes out at the end of June, but I thought it was already out so I've been telling everyone to go and get it. We did the launch for it at the Corner and that was an awesome show, heaps of people which is always good."

Guitarist and vocalist, Paul Dempsey explained the meaning behind the latest single, "It's a real freak of a song. It was writen on piano and translated to guitar, which explains why it sounds different. When we were in New Zealand we went in this elevator and the company who made it was Schindler, and their logo was Schindlers Lift. That got me thinking something about a lift as a concentration camp, the song is about being trapped in a lift. This businessman on his way out of his office to go to his family and he gets stuck in an elevator for hours and he thinks about where he's going and he realises he doesn't want to go home to his family and kids, he's in a lift and has to rethink his life. It has personal resonance but it's not a personal account."

Clint was only too willing to divulge some more of the secrets behind what makes Something for Kate roll. I've heard something about Jebediah and yourselves covering each others songs. Why didn't you do an 80s cover like everyone else is the days? Clint: Yeah, we're not really going to do an 80s song so we did some Jebediah instead. What we did was,, on the Roll Credit single they did a version of Clint which in one of out songs and we did a version of Harpoon which is one of theirs. Both cover versions are b-sides on the Roll Credit single and then they put both the new versions on their Harpoon EP. It's something we both wanted to do because we like each others bands. We were going to put it out as a split 7" and put it out on vinyl and give it away at gigs, but we went and recorded it and it came out a bit better than planned. Plus we couldn't come up with any other b-sides. I kind of think out version is better than theirs! I really like their song anyway, but I'm just really happy because our version doesn't really sound like theirs at all. We changed the melody line on the guitar and that sort of thing, so it's quite different. It has been totally Something for Kate-d. They did the same, totally changed our song into a Jebediah song. We've both got pretty distinctive sounds so it's not hard to pick them.

How do you think Working Against Me went as a single? Clint: It did OK. It was only on radio for about 2 weeks and then died off really quickly but it did OK. I thought it would have done better than it did, originally I thought as a single it would be bigger than Captain. We thought JJJ would pick up on it, but someone mentioned it sounded a bit too much like some other songs. We were pretty happy with the film clip as well. Paul didn't want to be in it and Toby had just left the band, so I thought I may as well just do it. We wanted to try and show the and has a sense of humour because we have this really dark image and a lot of people think we are a dark band, which we aren't. So, we wanted to try and break that and show the band has a sense of humour.

Have you done the clip for Roll Credit yet? Clint: Yeah, it has just been completed, we finished filming it last week. It was done on a squash court. It's not funny like Roll Credit, but it isn't too bleak. We haven't gone back to the dark side. We just come up with ideas or a concept and get a director in the expand on it. None of our clips have really had too much to do with what the songs is about, mainly because we don't want to give too much away. It's really hard to make something different to all the others that are around. We don't take them too seriously, but I really hate them, because you spend so long just to get 4 minutes worth of footage. Working Against Me took two and a half days to film, and they spend half the time setting up the shots. It's really hard to make it look like you are enjoying it.

So what else are Something for Kate doing at the moment besides releasing a single? Clint: We're doing some shows in Sydney and Adelaide with Jebediah and then we are coming back and doing Recovery. We are just constantly touring, we are going to take a month off soon to start writing for the new record. Which were were aiming to have out by the end of the year but it doesn't look like it now. We'll prebably start recording a few new songs in September. We're always writing, so we want to get some stuff recording.

Is the new material very similar to the days gone by of Something for Kate? Clint: Nah, not really. Basically the whole set is new songs now, we only play about 4-5 old ones. We figured it would be better for Stephanie, our new bass player to write new material with and that would make it easier, so she doesn't have to learn the whole back catalogue as well. We don't really play anything other than the singles for Elsewhere for 8 Minutres and we play Soundczech and Pinstripe sometimes. Eventually we want to learn the whole back catalogue together and change it a little. Paul plays more of the older material at his solo show as Scared of Horses. We are all writing together, Steph has had input on the new songs. We're bringing it down a bit. We're making it less rock and more dynamic. We try not to play as many of the rockier tracks in the set. Paul is trying to go for a less serious approach. He's writing less personal songs and even some silly stuff.

Clint (who made a special request to say hi to Steele) also insists that Something for Kate will be touring even more than ever if the rumours that Chopper Reid is moving to his home town of Rosebud are true. Keep an eye on the gig guide as these near-constant tourers are set to do more semi-regional shows in places such as Eltham and Frankston as they have recently been greatly successful.
