Echolalia
Something for Kate
Murmur * * *

MONSTER thrust Something for Kate into substantial national success and there's plenty of other material here to arouse curiosity. Theirs is a lilting, earnest and uncluttered soundscape - the sort of style that can easily lead to indulgence or a failure to retain the listener's attention. That's not he case with Echolalia. The lyrics here are surreal, ambiguous, intriguing and keep you guessing. It's quite sombre in places - there aren't many uplifting nuances to be found between the notes. Yet there is colour on Kate's musical palette, slapped lightly but very evidently. Despite being a three-piece, the band's playing creates the illusion of more hands on deck. It's a sense not of desperation but of enthusiasm and stubborn drive. Apart from their Monster hit, Jerry - Stand Up, Happy Endings and the wonderful Manmade Horse leave no doubt Something for Kate are fine writers and players.
