MONSTERS UNDER THE BED
SOMETHING FOR KATE / INTERVIEW

Having been following this band since their beginnings, they've always been one of my favourite bands & of course the chance to talk to them is always jumped at from my end. With the imminent release of the band's new single Monsters, which will be out by the time you read this, I thought it was obviously a great time to catch up with what the band have been doing.

The last couple of times I've spoken with the band, I've spoken with frontman Paul Dempsey, so it was great to catch up with another member of the band, Clint. We spoke about the band's preparation of both this single & the forthcoming new album Echolalia among other things.

Starting off, I asked Clint about the difference between this session of recordings & the previous work the band have done.

"We had a great time recording this album. We recorded it with Trina Shoemaker at Garry Beers' Mangrove Mountain Studios. It was such a different experience from the other albums. The position is excellent there, it's out in the country, but you're only 10 minutes from being in the nearest major town where you can get anything you need or you can just stay out in the country & relax."

I wondered what Trina Shoemaker had thought of the studio.

"Well, Trina's really a dog lover, so she had a great time, because the dogs were there. She enjoyed herself so much she said she's going to bring people back to record there, so she obviously enjoyed it as much as we did, so I think it was a good choice all round."

When pressed further about the recording sessions for the new album, Clint responded with how he saw the whole experience.

"Honestly, we're not party people, so recording away from home was really a good thing from us, because it took a lot of the pressure away from us as opposed to being closer to home, because we didn't have people dropping in all the time that we know & of course it also let us concentrate on the music."

Clint was also interested in discussing the band's website, which has been growing along with the band's popularity.

"We get involved with the website. The guy who does it for us lives close by, so we look at email & what's on the site & we get involved with what's going on the site & it lets our fans know more about what we're doing. A lot of people already knew about us & have been following us since early on, but there are a lot of others who have found out about our music from the website."

I asked Clint to compare the new album with the band's previous material.

"I think this album has evolved from what we've done in the past. There's a couple of more rock oriented songs & there are some quieter songs like the quieter moments on Beautiful Sharks. I think people who have liked our music in the past will like this album, but there's also some new things we've been doing too, so I guess people will ned to find out for themselves."

Lastly, I wondered about the expanded lineup which will be joining the band during their live shows.

"It's funny, a lot of people have asked us about that & it's really quite simple. We're a band who never sound the same from one night to the next live & we like to experiment in the studio. While we're a 3 piece, we don't want to limit what we do to just playing 3 piece music, so Paul will maybe play multiple guitar tracks. The short answer I guess is that we want to be able to reproduce our songs live & the extra people help us to do that."
