Kate catch of the day

SOMETHING For Kate will be among the bands yours truly will get to see when I fly the flag for the Penrith Press at Big Day Out.

I had a quick chat with Something For Kate's Clint Hyndman recently and learned that though it's their second time with Big Day Out, it is their first time doing the full tour. They also visited Penrith recently, and played a few songs at Penrith RSL on December 6.

"It was a good crowd, quite rowdy," Clint said.

The band used to be called Fish of the Day but at their first gig, the publican said that probably would not be an appropriate name so they had to come up with a new name. The new name came from a shopping list.

"The words something for Kate stood out so we stuck with that," Clint said, Kate being Paul Dempsey's dog.

Clint and Paul went to school together in Mornington and Stephanie Ashworth joined in 1998 after their original bassist left for the quiet country life.

Perth's Rockus Online Magazine has released its reader survey results for the year 2001, with Something For Kate taking out the Best Artist (Artist Of The Year) and Best Male Vocalist categories and finishing number one in both Top 10 Releases (Albums) for Echolalia and top 20 songs (singles) for Monsters, with Three Dimensions at No 13 and Twenty Years at No 18.
