Band offers screen treat

SOMETHING For Kate may have played only a handful of shows this year, but the trio has been anything but slothful.
Fans are about to be treated to a new DVD collection, A Diversion, on October 14.
The band spent several months piecing together 30 live songs, video clips and a mini-documentary, Holding Pattern.
But don't expect Something For Kate's own personal Spinal Tap. "It's someone else's perspective on following us around for the last two years," SFK frontman Paul Dempsey says.
"There's a lot of waiting around, waiting around at airports, backstage, hotels . . . there are a few moments when you see us going a little stir crazy, but there are no shots of us getting stuck in pods on stage."
Dempsey heads to the US next month for a solo tour to promote the American release of Echolalia on the label, Red Ink.
They'll start recording the follow-up to Echolalia over summer, probably again with US producer Trina Shoemaker.
Dempsey has become a producer: last month he finished producing a new album for Smudge songwriter Tom Morgan. Morgan's old songwriting partner, Evan Dando, also appears on the album.
"I don't really know why they called me," Dempsey says. "That was one of the first questions I asked Tom. And I don't think I ever got an answer. But I was thrilled to do it. I've always been interested in how I'd approach producing songs I haven't written."
Dempsey, a Lemonheads fan as a teenager, says he had a weird moment in the studio with Evan Dando.
"Evan and I were watching some videos and someone put on the Lemonheads movie they shot in Australia. I remember watching that when I was 16. It was weird watching it again with him."
Something For Kate's final Australian shows this year will be at the Livid Festival series.
