TOURING to promote their ARIA-nominated third album, Echolalia, Melbourne's Something For Kate play The Arena, in Brisbane, on Friday.
Frontman Paul Dempsey says the album has seen the band expand its borders.
"It's clearer and crisper," he says of the album. "We explored a lot of different instruments to create moods. The songwriting is also a lot more direct."
Renowned for their serious, emotional and intense live sets, Something For Kate is vocalist/guitarist Dempsey, bass player Stephanie Ashworth and drummer Clint Hyndman.
Dempsey, 25, believes SFK's serious tag has stuck because they don't do gimmicks, wacky photo shoots or silly video clips.
Instead they have chosen to swap the rock'n'roll circus for a more musical vibe.
It seems to have paid off. Echolalia has been one of the most successful Australian releases of the year.
So what does it mean?
"Echolalia is mimicking, it's repetition, it's getting caught on the same thing and not being able to get past it," Dempsey says.
SFK and Gota Cola play The Arena, in Brisbane, on Friday night.
