Something for Adelaide

IT SEEMS that whenever Something for Kate tours, Adelaide is the last city it plays. This has meant we get a sick Paul Dempsey.
But drummer Clint Hyndman says the band has that problem sussed.
"He's really good now," Hyndman assures. "I think he's learned not to drink too much on tour and he rugs up really well.
"I was just thinking about this the other day, we always seem to tour in winter and it's a recipe for disaster. But I think he'll be fine - and the good thing about the last show is it's always fun. Hopefully we'll do something wacky."
Something For Kate? Wacky? You heard right. Despite a reputation as hard-core mopes, this trio actually does smile. While promoting their third album, Echolalia (one of 2001's best), the members had to assure the fans that despite the depth of their music, they were enjoying themselves. And now that the much-anticipated follow-up is ready (out next month), the band is poised to join Australia's elite.
It has spent the last few months overseas, touring Europe (supporting Silverchair, no less) and America, getting plenty of notice. Now it's come home, the band's ready for the hype and anticipation which surrounds anything it does these days.
First up, its first Australian tour in almost two years. The thought of new material is causing plenty of excitement among SFK fans around the country - and Hyndman's surprised.
"You don't notice it when you're in the band," he reasons. "When you're in the band, no one comes up and tells you this stuff, you don't really get a vibe.
"We've always had this steady rise. Every record has just gone up in terms of the amount of people we play to and sales, it's always been on the upward. It's funny because people are quite fanatical. We have a cult following. But that's not pressure," he adds with a smile. "I think I might be able to make a living"
