ON THE TOWN with Something For Kate's

Q. You must be thrilled with the response to your latest album, Echolalia.
A. We don't generally place any expectations on it, the biggest pressure is what we put on ourselves. When other people respond to that, for us that's a bonus.
Q. How did you find the recording process?
A. We recorded at (INXS bass player) Garry Gary Beers' studio on the NSW coast. We wanted to make sure all the sounds were extremely high fidelity, that it was a warm and lush recording that gave justice to Paul's (Dempsey) vocals.
Q. Your sound is quite mellow now compared to your earlier albums.
A. It's a natural evolution that we've been on. We didn't set about to make raw records in the past. It was a combination of things, like the engineers, studio, guitars. I love the last two albums.
Q. Do you prefer the studio or the stage?
A. I can't decide which one I like better. There's a real anxiety in the studio because you're about to commit to something. Sometimes that can be really daunting, but it's also exciting. I know Paul gets off on the live thing.
Q. What is Echolalia?
A. It's a term from psychology. It describes the involuntary repetition of other people's words and actions.
Q. Will this be the album that helps you break into the US or UK?
A. We're currently dealing with overseas. I guess it's been such a busy year for us here we haven't been able to go over there. There's been bites of interest from different countries Japan, America and England.
* Something For Kate play at The Falls on New Year's Eve and The Big Day Out. Echolalia is out now.
