Something For Kate finish album
The Cairns Post, June 2 2003

SOMETHING for Kate have finished their new album, The Official Fiction.

The first single, a sparkling string-embellished rocker entitled Deja Vu, has been hailed as "undoubtedly the best song Something for Kate have ever recorded" by the Daily Telegraph's Dino Scatena. Deja Vu hits radio on June 9 and record shelves on July 7. The trio are overseas about to start their European tour with Silverchair. The Official Fiction was recorded at Mangrove Studios over 53 days, followed by 10 days at two studios in Los Angeles. The album features guest vocals from Grant-Lee Phillips, Lisa Germano and Caitlin Cary.

"We're just fans of the three of them," SFK's Paul Dempsey told Scatena.

"There were a couple of songs where I thought, 'I don't want just a second vocal, I want a second character. I want this song to have two distinctive voices'."

SFK spent an entire year locked up in a rehearsal room in Melbourne, building up the songs for the new album. The agenda, as always, was simply to produce something completely new. And that took time.

"Sometimes we have to wait or Paul will have to wait for something to present itself to him," bassist Stephanie Ashworth says.

"I guess we're just not the sort of band that are going to write for the sake of writing or entertainment. It's not why we're doing it. I think that's what always makes it harder for us all, and longer and fairly arduous."

The Official Fiction is due out on August 18. Meanwhile, the band will tour Australia in July with support act Death Cab for Cutie (Seattle). Tour dates will be announced shortly.
