CD OF THE WEEK

SOMETHING FOR KATE

THE OFFICIAL FICTION

(Sony)

It isn't always easy for an established band to move up a notch creatively, especially if their last album was very well received. Something For Kate really cemented their position in the Australian music industry with the popularity of Echolalia . But with their new release, The Official Fiction, the band have achieved that magical transition to a higher plane of musical credibility. Fans would probably scoff because they believe Something For Kate has always been making great music. But there's something about the feel of this album that exudes a different style of confidence and ability. From the moment Paul Dempsey starts singing on the opening track, it feels like a great Australian album. On tracks including Song For A Sleepwalker, Reverse Soundtrack and the current single De Ja Vu , I could almost imagine a large crowd at a music festival watching Dempsey perform on stage, transfixed by the songs. There are undoubtedly some great anthems here. The whole band is very impressive musically, but Dempsey's voice makes all the difference. 8/10.
