Kate's kiss of success
Hills Shire Times, October 14 2003

SOMETHING For Kate's powerfully rich melodies, lush instrumentation and thought-provoking lyrics come to the Castle Hill Tavern on October 22. Drummer Clint Hyndman told the Times last week that he was surprised by the level of the band's success.

"I was expecting we would only play gigs at local pubs," he said.

The Melbourne-based band has just released its fourth album The Official Fiction and is currently on a tour which includes gigs in London, New York and Berlin. Hyndman said the band's success had been an unbelievable experience with their fan base growing tremendously since their first gig in a small pub in Melbourne.

"Now we can play three nights in Melbourne and attract crowds of of up to 15,000," he said.

"It has been great, I have seen a lot of the world and met a lot of interesting people it is a great way to spend your 20s," the 27-year-old drummer said.

The unassuming Aussie band took two months to record their latest album which was engineered and produced by Trina Shoemaker, well known for her work with Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, Sheryl Crow and Whiskeytown. She also co-produced the band's third album Echolalia, which aside from approaching double platinum sales, debuted at number two on the national chart, was JJJ's Listeners Album of the Year and was voted as Rolling Stone Readers Poll Best Artist, Band, Album and Single. This year the band is up for three ARIA nominations: Best Album, Best Group and Best Rock Album. They will find out if they have been successful the night before the Castle Hill Tavern gig. There is no shortage of tracks to check out on their latest album, with such singles as Deja Vu and Song For A Sleepwalker already getting airplay. Fans at Castle Hill Tavern will get a treat when the band performs Hydman's favourite song on the album Coldwater Canyon.

Something For Kate will play at Castle Hill Tavern on Wednesday, October 22 at 7pm. Tickets: $23. Bookings: 9634 5300.
