Band turns up the heat

LAST night Something For Kate were hot.
Not just because they're one of Australia's premier rock and roll outfits. It
was more to do with the sweaty temperatures inside the crowded Escape club. The
Melbourne three-piece, especially drummer Clint Hyndman, really earned their pay
cheques on stage during a very tropical show. The club staff noticed this too
and were passing out free bottles of water to eager fans dying of thirst. This
was Something For Kate's second Townsville show, and their first as a headlining
act.
The set kicked off with the excellent song Three Dimensions then the band
proceeded to give the Townsville crowd a great set which included the catchy
Electricity, Hallways, Song For A Sleepwalker and the current smash hit Deja Vu
which brought rapturous applause from the crowd. Front man Paul Dempsey was in
fine form, hitting every note with perfection and passion. The show was great,
the band and the crowd shared a fantastic feeling of intimacy.
Towards the end of the show, the band launched into a few acoustic numbers,
including a great rendition of Bowie's Ashes To Ashes and the beautiful,
melancholy number Light At The End Of The Tunnel, which was just brilliant,
Dempsey's guitar collaborating with violin provided by touring
guitarist/violinist Phillip George Branson.
Ultimately a stand-out show from a very professional band -- hopefully next time
they'll be able to play in a bigger venue.
