Monsters - Something for Kate (murmur/Sony)
* * * * (four stars)
Something for Kate have a huge fan base; one, I admit, I've never really been part of (aside from the excellent Captain and Astronaut singles). Always treading the line between pop and angular, aural scalpture, the Melbourne three-piece move nearer to the former with the lovely languor of Monsters. Bathed in melodies alternately soothing and sinister, and with an absolute foglifter of a chorus, the overall feel is one of sublime majesty. Singer-songwriter-guitarist Paul Dempsey still comes across as a man in need of a hug, with his beautifully crafted but ever-despondent lyrics ("I don't want to slide into apathy/And I don't want to die in captivity/But these monsters follow me around/Hunt me down, try to wipe me out"), but here the beauty of the music offsets the morbidity.
