SOMETHING FOR KATE/ADAM SAID GALORE
(Prince of Wales)

It is impossible as a music reviewer to be a hardcore fan of every band you're sent along to see but one of the absolute joys of the job is walking out of a gig blown away and converted. You're exposed to a hell of a lot of bands and every now and again experiencing a particular artist or group's live set for the first time catapults them instantly and indelibly onto your consciousness. Something for Kate have made such an impression on me and clearly on plenty of others previously by the turn-out at the Prince.
Adam Said Galore I had seen before and my money says the heavy swarm of people who'd arrived early would have the same feeling of discovery about Adam Said Galore's spirited set that I did. They enticed the audience with schizophrenic mood swings, all the way from shoe-gazing listlessness to kicking out the jams euphoria. In the space of one track you can expect the three lo-fi meandering guitars to cruch into a full powered, frantic explosion when you least expect it. Adam Said Galore are more challenging than most to listen to but the concentration is certainly worth the reward of witnessing their musicianship.
The people there to see Something For Kate were obviously attuned to that mindset as similarly emotionally charged epics rang forth one after the other as soon as this band set foot on stage. Verses of delicate bulnerability were shunted aside for impassioned, dramatic choruses with calculated timing. Something For Kate's sound shook through the wall to wall punters as they lapped up the past glory of Elsewhere For Eight Minutes and tracks from the forthcoming album Beautiful Sharks with equal abandon, including shahmelessly slavering over spontaneous sing-along sessions for the crowd to be swept away in. And singer Paul Dempsey wondered if we were having a good time! Two encores later the rapturous applause should have convinced him. Something For Kate were certainly something special to me and to so many others in the room.
